Energy Reporting Regulations

The Department of Energy on 25 March 2015 published the draft energy reporting regulations. The regulation mandates large energy users in the sectors listed in Annexure A of the regulations to monitor and manage their energy consumption.

The draft regulation classifies users into two categories:

  • those with energy consumption exceeding 180 terajoules (TJ) per annum are required to disclose energy consumption data on the main energy carriers prescribed in Annexure B of the regulation.
  • those with energy consumption exceeding 400 terajoules (TJ) per annum are required to additionally submit an energy management plan in accordance with SANS 50001, indicating savings potential and measures.

While measurement and reporting needs to take place on an annual basis, the energy management plans need to be updated every 5 years. Click here to download

Prepare for Submission
Large energy users are required to register and submit energy consumption data to the Department of Energy (DoE) within 90 days of the regulations coming into effect. Energy management plans need to be submitted 12 months after commencement of the regulations.
